Renewable energy now supplies over 30% of world’s electricity
Renewable energy made up over 30% of global electricity in the previous year, marking a significant increase primarily due to the rise of wind and solar power. The report by climate thinktank Ember suggests a potential decrease in fossil fuel generation driven by the steady growth of clean electricity, which has curtailed the rise of fossil fuels by nearly two-thirds over the last decade.

Solar power, accelerating rapidly, was the primary contributor to the growth in electricity generation in 2023, producing more than double the electricity compared to coal.
Ember's review covered 80 countries (92% of global electricity demand) and noted a forecasted 2% reduction in global fossil fuel generation in the near future. Despite a decrease in the power sector, fossil fuels continue to dominate global energy use in transport, industry, and heating, with an 82% share in the world's primary energy consumption.
