Low-fat vegan diet improves insulin sensitivity and glycemic control in type 1 diabetes
A study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine shows a low-fat vegan diet improves insulin sensitivity and glycemic control in individuals with type 1 diabetes. The vegan diet participants needed 28% less insulin and saw a 127% increase in insulin sensitivity over the portion-controlled diet group.

Weight decreased by about 11 pounds on average in the vegan group, while the change was nonsignificant in the portion-controlled group. The vegan diet resulted in a notable reduction in cholesterol levels, with total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol significantly decreased compared to the portion-controlled group.

Cardiovascular risk was also reduced on the vegan diet, correlating with reductions in insulin use, HbA1c levels, and LDL cholesterol.
