Giant tortoises returned to Madagascar 600 years after they were wiped out
A project aims to reintroduce giant tortoises to Madagascar, potentially restoring the island's ecosystem absent for 600 years. The Aldabra giant tortoise was chosen; it's the second-largest land tortoise species with a history tied to Madagascar.
These tortoises contribute to ecological balance by dispersing seeds through their dung, promoting forest and shrubland growth. In 2018, a conservation team released the first group of 12 Aldabra tortoises in Madagascar's Anjajavy Reserve.
The reintroduction has been successful, with the tortoises beginning to reproduce, signaling a positive step in habitat restoration.
