Smartphone bans at school led to more socialization, fewer distractions
Netherlands implemented a school smartphone ban, leading to increased socialization and decreased distractions and bullying, according to Radboud University. Post-ban, over half of the surveyed students reported talking more with peers, and 40% found breaks more enjoyable.
Only 21% felt less distracted in class, a result lower than expected, attributed to the availability of other digital devices like laptops. The ban also contributed to a reduction in bullying, with enforced phone restrictions having a significant impact on student behavior. However, the ban caused practical issues such as problems in checking schedule changes and reduced accessibility to parents; socially isolated students felt more excluded.
